Description

Sodium Silicate is an important chemical compound used in various industries, especially glass and ceramic industries. Chemically, this substance is a representative of the group of cosilicates, and due to its unique properties, it is considered a widely used sealer in the tile and ceramic industries as a cheap alternative to sodium tripolyphosphate (STPP).

Chemical formula of sodium silicate: Sodium silicate is known by the chemical formula Na₂O·3SiO₂. This formula indicates the existence of two sodium atoms (Na) and three silicon dioxide (SiO₂) molecules in each chemical unit.

Other names of silicate:

  • Sodium silicate
  • glass water
  • Sodium cristobalite

chemical properties:

  • Sodium silicate is known as a transparent and reflective crystalline solid.
  • This compound has very good thermal properties and can be used at high temperatures (up to about 1500 degrees Celsius).
  • Sodium silicate has good chemical resistance against acids and bases.

Production method of sodium silicate:

Sodium silicate is usually produced by combining silicon dioxide (SiO₂) with sodium carbonate (Na₂CO₃). The production steps of this material are:

a. Raw materials: silicon dioxide (silica) and sodium carbonate (sodium carbonate) are added to the mixture as raw materials.

b. Melting and discharge: the mixture of the two mentioned materials is melted in a furnace at a high temperature. Then the molten material is gradually discharged and turns into a solid state.

J. Cooling and Crushing: After discharge, the sodium silicate is cooled to a solid form and then crushed into smaller pieces.

d. Packaging: The final product is placed in suitable packaging for use in various industries.

Sodium silicate is used as an important material in glass-making, ceramics, explosives, and chemical industries, and it has suitable physical and chemical properties that make it very important for some industrial needs.
